Honest advice, not a sales pitch

Will a heat pump actually work in my home?

These are the worries that stop most people before they start. None of them is the automatic “no” it’s usually presented as, and a proper survey gives you a straight answer either way.

And if a heat pump isn't right for your home, we'll tell you. We fit A-rated boilers too, so we've no reason to push you either way.

“Will I need to replace all my radiators?”

Rarely. Every room is checked against its own heat loss, and the Adia system in every package balances the radiators you already have. One radiator upgrade is included; any more are only fitted where your survey shows a room needs it.

“We’ve got no room for a cylinder.”

The cylinder usually goes in the airing cupboard. Where there’s no space, a Sunamp heat battery stores up to 3× more hot water in the same space and can fit a cupboard or under the stairs (at extra cost).

“Won’t it be noisy for the neighbours?”

Most modern units run at around 40 to 50 dB(A) at a metre: the quiet end is fridge-like. Siting is checked with the MCS 020 sound calculation before installation, not argued about afterwards.

“Do I need planning permission?”

Most installations don’t: they fall under permitted development. Listed buildings, conservation areas and homes over the border in Wales have their own rules, and we check those before quoting rather than after.

“Will it be cheaper to run than gas?”

Honestly, it depends on the design. At current rates a heat pump needs a seasonal efficiency above about 2.8 to beat a gas boiler. A well-designed system running at a low flow temperature clears that comfortably; a badly designed one doesn't. That's why every one of ours starts with a room-by-room heat-loss calculation.

Andrew · Liverpool

Swapping an ageing gas boiler for a heat pump

  • Vaillant 12kW heat pump
  • Two radiators upgraded
  • Also fitted: solar and battery
  • His 12-year-old gas boiler still worked, but was nearing the end of its life
  • We were straight with him about what a heat pump would and wouldn’t save
  • A thorough survey took about half a day, and showed a couple of radiators needed changing
  • Installed in about four days with limited disruption, and the heat pump now provides his hot water too

“You really get gentle heat through the house 24 hours a day.”

Woolton · Liverpool

Told there was no room for a heat pump cylinder. We found a way.

  • Worcester Bosch heat pump
  • Sunamp heat battery
  • Also fitted: solar and battery
  • Another company had said there was no space for the hot water cylinder a heat pump needs
  • We designed the system around a Sunamp heat battery, about a quarter of the size of a standard cylinder
  • The heat pump went ahead, and the home is now completely off gas, with no gas meter or standing charge

Adia Thermal

Included in every package

Make the most of the radiators you already have

Adia Thermal is a smart control system that helps a heat pump work with your existing radiators and pipework, where your survey shows they’re suitable. It balances the heat room by room, so you get even comfort with fewer changes.

  1. Adia Hub

Connects the heat pump to your existing radiators and hot water.

  2. Flow balancing valves

Fit onto your existing radiator valves to balance the flow room by room.

  3. Room sensors

Measure each room’s temperature so it gets exactly the heat it needs.

Use your existing radiators

Can work with the radiators and pipework you have, including mixed-bore, where your survey shows they’re suitable.

Room-by-room comfort

Each room gets the heat it needs, so the whole house stays comfortable.

Simple smart controls

Set every room from the Adia app, with remote monitoring and support.

Efficient running

Adjusts to the weather, demand and your tariff to keep the system running efficiently.

Faster, tidier installs

Plug-and-play hub. In as little as 2–3 days in most homes.

Whisper quiet

Flow balancing valves run at under 20dB.

Hot water

A hot water option for every home

A heat pump heats water more gently than a combi boiler, so it stores hot water ready for when you need it. Your survey checks the space you have and recommends the right option.

Telford Tempest heat pump cylinder

Included as standard

Telford Tempest heat pump cylinder

A cylinder designed for heat pumps, giving plenty of mains-pressure hot water for the whole family. Sized to your package, from 150 to 300 litres.

Good to know

Common questions

How much does an air source heat pump cost? +

Our Worcester Bosch packages start at £12,740 installed at 0% VAT. Off the gas grid, the £9,000 grant brings that to £3,740; for gas-heated homes, the £7,500 grant brings it to £5,240. Those are guide prices for a standard installation. Your survey gives you a fixed figure for your home.

Will it definitely be cheaper to run than my gas boiler? +

No, and anyone promising that is guessing. At current price-cap rates electricity costs roughly 3.3 times as much as gas per unit, so a heat pump needs a seasonal efficiency above about 2.8 to beat a gas boiler. An average installation lands about level and a well-designed one saves. That’s why design, low flow temperatures and proper controls decide your bill, not the badge on the unit. Coming off oil, LPG or electric heating, the case is usually much stronger.

Will a heat pump work in an older house? +

Usually, yes. The survey decides, not the age of the house. Solid-wall terraces lose more heat, so they can need a larger unit and some bigger radiators. Loft and cavity insulation, where possible, lowers both the equipment size and the running cost.

Who applies for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant? +

We do. The scheme is installer-led and must be claimed by an MCS-certified installer, which we are. You give consent and verify your identity, and the grant comes straight off your quoted price. The work has to be finished within 120 days of the application.

What if I need more radiators changed? +

One radiator upgrade is included in every package. If your heat-loss survey shows more rooms need a bigger radiator, a typical double-panel (K2) radiator costs around £370 to £430 supplied and fitted, at 0% VAT as part of a heat pump installation. You’ll see every cost in your fixed quote before you commit.

What happens at the free home survey? +

One of our engineers visits your home, measures it room by room for a heat-loss calculation and checks your radiators, pipework and where the outdoor unit and cylinder could go. You then get a fixed written price with the grant already taken off.

Can I spread the cost? +

Yes. Finance is available through Novuna Personal Finance, subject to status and a credit check, with a minimum deposit and a 14-day cooling-off period. We’ll run the monthly figures against your actual quote.

I rent my home. Can I apply? +

Not directly. The grant goes to the property owner, which includes landlords. If you’d like a heat pump considered, the conversation needs to start with your landlord, and we’re happy to talk them through it.
